Child Development During Tough Economic Times, Parents Find Ways to Focus on Child Health; PTA’s Awarded
By Colleen Hurley, RD, Certified Kids Nutrition SpecialistThe current economic crisis is causing a great deal of stress and worry. With the ever present US election also on everyones mind, it can be tough to focus on the positive. Despite the collective global worrying, schools and parents remain focused on their number one priority: the healthy development of their children. The National PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is recognizing 22 school PTAs for their creative and outstanding efforts with grants for PTAs Healthy Lifestyles Month in November. The nations largest parent volunteer organization, the PTA has 5 million members and more than 250,000 local units. The PTA thrives in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense schools in Europe and the Pacific with members ranging from parents, students, and teachers to business and community leaders. National PTA officials chose schools in 13 different states, whom will be awarded a cash grant of up to $1,000. The money will help fund Healthy Lifestyles Month activities which will promote parental involvement in schools, health and wellness; with an overall emphasis on the positive association between student achievement and involvement. In order to win the grant, schools had to submit their ideas on how they plan to help families eat healthier and increase physical activity. Winning ideas included family fit night and biking to school. National PTA president John Harp Domene explains that families everywhere are facing financial woes that make it difficult to put food on the table, regardless of nutritional content. What You Can DoIf creating some initiatives for Healthy Lifestyles Month sounds like something you would like to have your childs school, visit the National PTA website for ideas. If there is no PTA at your school, you can always challenge your family to both eat a little better and increase physical activity. Even though the budgets may be a little tight, it doesnt have to cost a lot of money to eat and be healthy. You can start by packing a healthy school lunch and utilizing the many free ways to keep your body moving.
